A Policy-Driven Youth Leader: Gita Gurung in Nepal’s PR Race
“Nepal must ensure its voice, agenda, and national interests are clearly represented in global forums. Participation should be purposeful and beneficial for both the country and its young population”

Gita Gurung, a proportional representation candidate from Solukhumbu representing the Nepali Congress, is positioning her campaign around a policy-driven agenda that blends grassroots realities with global democratic discourse.
SOLUKHUMBU, Nepal: In an era defined by youth mobilization, climate urgency, and demands for more participatory governance, Gita Gurung, a proportional representation candidate from Solukhumbu representing the Nepali Congress, is positioning her campaign around a policy-driven agenda that blends grassroots realities with global democratic discourse.
Born in 1995 in Jubu, Thulung Dudhkoshi–04, one of the most remote villages of Solukhumbu district, Gurung’s political trajectory reflects a transition from student leadership to provincial-level party engagement. Her candidacy emerges at a time when Nepal’s political sphere is witnessing a gradual generational shift, with younger leaders advocating pragmatic policy reforms and stronger democratic participation.
Early Life and Academic Formation
Raised in a geographically isolated Himalayan community, Gurung began her education at Jana Kalyan Secondary School in Solukhumbu before pursuing higher studies in Kathmandu at Trinity College. She later completed a Bachelor of Science degree from Tri-Chandra Multiple Campus and a Master’s degree in International Relations from Tribhuvan University.
Peers and educators describe her as academically disciplined, research-oriented, and consistently active in extracurricular and leadership activities- traits that have informed her policy-focused political messaging.
Leadership Roots in Student Politics and Party Structures
Gurung’s public leadership began within the Nepal Student Union (NSU), where she served as chair of the school committee at Jana Kalyan Secondary School, later becoming vice president of NSU Solukhumbu and an elected central committee member. Her continued rise within institutional politics includes her role as a General Convention Representative of the Nepali Congress and her current position as a member of the party’s Koshi Province Committee.
Colleagues within the party often characterize her as clear, independent, and fearless, noting her consistent vocal stance against wrongdoing and her advocacy for internal party democracy and transparency.
Youth Employment, Entrepreneurship, and the Brain Drain Challenge
In an interview with Youth Times, Gurung emphasized that her core agenda prioritizes youth employment and entrepreneurship, particularly in mountain districts where economic opportunities remain limited.
“Solukhumbu’s youth possess talent and resilience, but they require policy-backed opportunities and pragmatic strategies for employment and entrepreneurship,” she said.
She highlighted the growing issue of brain drain, noting that the migration of skilled youth to Europe, the United States, and other regions has long-term implications for Nepal’s economy and tourism sector.
“When capable Himalayan youth migrate abroad due to lack of opportunities, local economies weaken and sectors like tourism face structural challenges. Retaining talent through viable policies is essential,” Gurung stated.
Her proposed policy direction includes skill development, entrepreneurship ecosystems, and locally grounded employment strategies tailored to remote Himalayan regions.
Climate Advocacy from a Himalayan Constituency
Representing a district globally recognized for Mount Everest and high-altitude tourism, Gurung has placed climate change at the center of her political narrative. She argues that Himalayan communities are experiencing direct ecological impacts, including glacier stress, environmental degradation, and tourism vulnerability.
“Solukhumbu is known worldwide for its mountains, yet those mountains are increasingly affected by climate change. Strong policy advocacy for climate resilience in mountain regions is no longer optional, it is necessary,” she said.
Her campaign calls for stronger national and international climate engagement, particularly focused on protecting fragile Himalayan ecosystems and sustaining tourism-based livelihoods.
Global Outlook and Multilateral Engagement
With an academic background in international relations, Gurung has articulated a foreign policy outlook that stresses meaningful participation in bilateral and multilateral forums such as the United Nations, SAARC, and BIMSTEC. She argues that Nepal’s global engagement should be agenda-driven and strategically aligned with national interests and youth priorities.
“Nepal must ensure its voice, agenda, and national interests are clearly represented in global forums. Participation should be purposeful and beneficial for both the country and its young population,” she told Youth Times.
She has also underscored the importance of advocating for Nepal’s tourism, labor concerns, and climate issues in international diplomatic spaces.
Democracy, Youth Participation, and Global Gen Z Alignment
Gurung’s broader political philosophy is rooted in democratic values, deliberative governance, and youth inclusion in policymaking processes. She has repeatedly emphasized that young people should not only be future leaders but active contributors to present governance systems.
“Youth participation must be institutionalized from decision-making to policy formulation. Democracy becomes stronger when young voices are included in governance structures,” she said.
Her global agenda includes strengthening voting rights, political rights, deliberative democracy, and creating pathways for young leaders to assume national and international leadership roles. She has also expressed support for the principle that youth are capable of leadership and governance in shaping a more peaceful and sustainable world.
Indigenous Knowledge and Cultural Representation
While her campaign primarily focuses on youth, governance, and development, Gurung has also noted her identity as a member of the Gurung community and stated that she will advocate for the promotion of indigenous knowledge, traditional skills, and cultural rights within broader national policy frameworks.
“Indigenous knowledge systems, skills, and cultural practices hold practical value for sustainable development and social inclusion,” she said, adding that such knowledge should be recognized within modern policy and education systems.
However, she frames this not as a singular political identity but as part of a wider inclusive governance approach that respects cultural diversity while prioritizing national development and democratic participation.
A Youth-Centric Political Narrative for a Changing Electorate
Political observers suggest that Gurung’s candidacy reflects an emerging trend in Nepal’s democratic evolution: younger leaders articulating policy agendas that intersect local realities with global concerns. Her emphasis on entrepreneurship, climate resilience, youth leadership, and democratic accountability resonates strongly with internationally connected Gen Z audiences who increasingly prioritize transparency, sustainability, and inclusive governance.
As Nepal approaches a new electoral cycle, Gurung’s campaign presents a narrative shaped by academic grounding, grassroots experience, and a forward-looking policy vision. Whether in local economic reform, global diplomacy, or democratic participation, her central message remains consistent: youth leadership is not a future possibility but a present necessity in shaping a stable, inclusive, and globally engaged Nepal.
