IT’S the night when fashion’s elite come out to play – and this year’s Met Gala in New York certainly didn’t disappoint.

The glittering fundraiser is hosted in honour of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute and sees the stars take to the red carpet dressed to impress.

Each year the event, nicknamed the “Oscars of the East Coast”, has a different theme to inspire the fashion choices.

And for this occasion the stars were asked to dress to reflect "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination".

The theme has been selected to pay tribute to the masterworks of religious art in the museum, and stars such as Rosie Huntington-Whiteley nailing the look.

From Devon to the divine, Rosie is definitely our style angel, and looked heavenly in a shimmering metallic gown by Ralph Lauren, and she even brought her own halo.

 

Of course Rihanna would turn up dressed as the Pope.

She's co-hosting this year's event, and made sure her outfit wiped the Vatican's floor with everyone else's efforts.

The heavily embellished number was created by John Galliano for fashion house Maison Margiela - and came complete with her very own Mitre hat.

Kim Kardashian showed off her heavenly body in a skin tight chainmail dress by Versace.

The fitted design, embellished with crucifixes, sure made the most of her famous assets. She teamed the dress with a high ponytail and layers of fake lashes.

Kendall Jenner went for a butter-wouldn't-melt white jumpsuit by new designer label Off-White - though it looks pretty clean to us.

It's a safe, and surprisingly covered up look for the supermodel.

Gigi Hadid had us a flutter with her butterfly inspired gown, the Versace design belongs in style heaven.

Kendall wore dangling diamond earrings and had her hair tied back in a ponytail with a centre parting

Amanda Seyfried looked angelic in a golden Prada gown and tumbling blonde locks, she even accessorised with a halo-like tiara, bless.

Blake Lively looked stunning in a royal red Atalier Versace gown.

The embellished dress had sheer panelling on the legs - showing off her slim shape.

She topped off the look with a golden headdress - Amen to that outfit.

Alexa Chung was one of the few attendees to wear a mini dress last night, and she looked doll-like in a white peasant style dress.

The model turned fashion designer brought a dose of cool British style to the red carpet.

Co-chair of the evening Amal Clooney looked chic in a gown teamed with satin trousers.

The look was by British designer Richard Quinn - whose catwalk show was graced by the Queen at London fashion week in February.

Meanwhile model Hailey Baldwin opted for a chic, off shoulder gown by Tommy Hilfiger, topped with a flower crown, heaven sent.

Miley Cyrus ignored the religious theme and went for a knockout dress instead. Her slinky Stella McCartney number had a seriously low neckline and a scooped back.

Model Emily Ratajkowski kept her famous figure *almost* under wraps, in a satin Marc Jacobs gown.

She opted for a thigh high split and cut-out detail on the back instead of a low neckline.

Host with the most Anna Wintour also nailed the theme, and looked every inch the belle of the ball in custom Chanel.

The Gala chairwoman wore a glittery floor-length, high-necked gown with a dangling cross necklace at the front.

Naomi Watts looked stunning in a caped number by Michael Kors, the gold embroidered design gave a nod to the theme without going full Hail Mary.

Our very own Rita Ora wore a stunning black lace Prada gown, accessorised with a sequinned gloves - and a huge spike headpiece.

We're slightly confused by the tiny yellow handbag though, which was just ever so slightly off-theme.

Selena Gomez looked angelic in an ethereal off white gown by Coach. The singer's tiered design had a vintage feel to it - simply heavenly.

Actress Zoe Kravitz left little to the imagination in a black, lace gown by Saint Laurent that tied at the side.

The sheer, thigh flashing design might raise some eyebrows in church though.

Also causing a sensation was Kate Moss, who returned to the event for the first time since 2009.

Kate Moss will always be the High Priestess of fashion in our eyes, and while her Saint Laurent LBD is stylish, it doesn't excite get us into a flap.

Something a bit more exciting next year please, Kate.

Irina Shayk was one of the night's golden girls.

Her metallic dress sure made the most of her supermodel figure, thanks to its plunging neckline and slashed split.

Diane Kruger's Prabal Gurung gown had the best of both worlds - the mini tulip shaped design came with a huge flowing train, a la Rihanna's omelette dress circa 2015.

British model Winnie Harlow looked a bit of all white in a gown by Tommy Hilfiger - topped off with a statement headpiece.

Instagram sensation Jasmine Sanders, also known as Golden Barbie, looked every inch the star for her first time at the event in a custom H&M gown.

Emma Stone's navy Louis Vuitton gown contrasted beautifully with her red locks. Decadent gold details gave the chic dress a regal feel.

Victoria's Secret Angel Stella Maxwell wore an embellished Moschino design depicting the Virgin Mary - she loses points for the dodgy Rapunzel hair extensions though.

Ariana Grande's Vera Wang dress was covered in prints of artist Michelangelo's famous painting The Last Judgement.

The songstress accessorised the fairytale like gown with a huge bow - giving us a nice break from dodgy thorn headpieces.

Sienna Miller played it safe but chic in long sleeves and sequins - topped with a star shaped tiara.

The gala is the biggest event in the fashion fundraising calendar, with donations and proceeds going towards the Met's Costume Institute.

The annual event is a celebration of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which is located in New York.

There are total of three locations used for the 2018 show: the Anna Wintour Costume Center, the medieval galleries at the Met, and uptown at the Cloisters.

There are 40 Vatican robes and accessories on display this year, including Pope Benedict XV's white silk cape embroidered with gold thread.
